Frequently Asked Questions
I’m often asked many questions by people who are looking for a personalised and memorable ceremony.
Q. What’s the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?
A. A Registrar conducts legally binding ceremonies limited to take place at a licensed venue. An Independent Celebrant like me, creates fully personalised ceremonies especially for you anywhere—be it a beach, forest, or your garden. Celebrant ceremonies aren’t legally binding in England, but many couples complete the legalities with a Registrar separately, allowing them to enjoy a unique, meaningful celebration crafted just for them.
Q. What can I have in my wedding ceremony?
A. Unlike a religious service or a registrar service, a celebrant led service literally has no limits. You can incorporate religious elements into your ceremony. Whether you want to include prayers, blessings, or religious readings, I can create a ceremony that reflects your beliefs. Alternatively, if you prefer a non-religious ceremony, with symbolic rituals like handfasting, A Sand Ceremony or ‘Jumping the Broom’, we can do that too. The choice is absolutely yours!
Q. Will you write the ceremony for us?
Yes, as an Independent Celebrant, that’s my responsibility and I’ll write a bespoke ceremony just for you. I can create the perfect ceremony whether, wedding, naming or funeral. Reflecting the individuals unique story, values, and wishes. We’ll work closely together to ensure every word feels personal and meaningful.
Q. How far in advance do I need to contact you and book you in?
A. For weddings; the longer the lead time, the better. The best thing you can do is get in touch as soon as you start thinking about planning your ceremony. However, if you are planning a short notice wedding do contact me and see if I’m free. For Naming ceremonies; a couple of months in advance is a good guideline. Then we can work together to create the perfect ceremony. For Funerals; obviously following the death of a loved one things can be confusing and disorientating. If you contact me we can discuss the funeral plans and the ceremony required and that will take one weight off your plate.
Q. How far will you travel?
A. Wherever you need me to! I am usually a wedding celebrant for ceremonies in the North, but with my camper van – ‘Athelstan the Van’ I’m happy to travel, and I LOVE doing ceremonies abroad 🙂
